Working towards Smoke Free Coventry

Giving up smoking

The Teaching and Primary Care Trust (tPCT) Smoking Cessation Service offers quit groups which are friendly and informal. They run for half an hour per week over five weeks and include an eight week course of Nicotine Replacement patches (NRT). These are given on a weekly basis and the balance supplied at the final group meeting. The quit groups are free of charge and essentially the NRT is free to those who are eligible for free prescriptions. Those not eligible will be charged a one off prescription charge at the current rate. (Currently £6.40).

The groups are confidential and participants are given advice and information:

Participants are expected to attend all five session’s, however in some circumstances where this is impossible, with the Smoking Cessation Advisor’s agreement, one of these may be omitted.

In order to make the groups accessible they are run at a number of venues throughout the city and take place during the day, evenings and weekends. There are a number of groups starting each month.

The use of NRT with group support has been proven to be the most effective way of quitting smoking and is twice as effective as using NRT or other products alone.

For pregnant women who wish to stop smoking, the TPCT Smoking Cessation Service offers one to one counselling support. NRT patches are not offered to pregnant women through this service.

We are currently unable to offer our services to anyone under the age of 18.
